The story of the Wellington tramway system started long ago on the other side of the world. Mass public transport enabled new factories and offices springing up in the early 1800’s to get a ready supply of labour
following the industrialisation of major cities.

Wellington entered the story in August 1878 when the first tramcars to grace the streets of Wellington were small four wheeled tramcars hauled along by a tiny steam powered engine.

There were two hundred and seventy six trams built for use in Wellington, fourteen were horse drawn, two hundred and sixty passenger electric trams and two freight only cars.

This DVD portrays the evolution of Wellington’s tramway system from its early beginnings through to its closing in 1964 and the formation of a working museum at Queen Elizabeth Park near Paekakariki.
